Get rid of unwanted Windows Store apps in Windows 10

This short guide can help you reclaim your Windows 10 desktop by getting rid of all unwanted Windows Store apps and keep the ones you need.

Not just that Windows 10 comes bundled with lots of apps that you are never going to use, it is also impossible to uninstall some of them by simply right clicking them in the Start Menu. Here is a solution.

Step 1: Uninstall all apps

Search for the Windows PowerShell, right click it, and run it as administrator:

Issue the following command:

Get-AppxPackage | Remove-AppxPackage

If you want to uninstall apps for all users, do this instead:

Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers | Remove-AppxPackage

You will see the following operation in progress:

You have successfully removed all the Windows Store apps!

Step 2: Reinstall required apps (if any)

I found that I also lost Sticky Notes, which I use. To reinstall any app, follow the process below:

List the available app names:

Get-Appxpackage -Allusers

This will display the app names like this:

Then find the app you need and copy its FullPackageName to clipboard:

Then issue the following command, replacing PACKAGEFULLNAME with the name you copied to the clipboard:

Add-AppxPackage -register "C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\PACKAGEFULLNAME\AppxManifest.xml" -DisableDevelopmentMode

In my case, it would be:

Add-AppxPackage -register "C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.MicrosoftStickyNotes_1.6.2.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\AppxManifest.xml" -DisableDevelopmentMode

And you will see your app getting installed:

Repeat the procedure for any other app you need!

Step 3: Enable Windows Photo Viewer (desktop)

Windows 10 also comes with Photos, a store app. The above process also removes Photos. If you want, you can get it back through step 2 or just go back to the nice old Windows Photo Viewer that came with earlier versions of Windows.

Copy paste the following into notepad:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\photoviewer.dll\shell]

Save the file as anything with a .reg extension. Then just double click the file and add it to the registry!

You have enabled Windows Photo Viewer, but it is not set as the default application for image files. You can do that using the Properties window of any .JPG, .PNG, etc file.

Enjoy your clean new Windows 10 desktop!
